Blog of the Week: Damien Hirst

16 September 2009 No Comment FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Fake Steve Jobs (a humourous tech blogger who blogged as Steve Jobs before he was legally required to add the ‘Fake’ prefix) seems to have started a trend. Fake celebrity blogs of all sorts have popped up over the years and this week’s Blog of the Week, Damien Hirst, is by far the most creative to date.

The fake Damien Hirst, who describes himself as “an unknown artist from an unknown country living an unknown life in an unknown village trying to infect our planet earth with the true love for art” uses his blog to showcase artwork in a highly satrical style mimicking the famous artist. The real Damien Hirst is an English artist of international art renown whose modern style and innovative works have brought him a wide following. Reputed to be the richest living artist in the world and famous for works such as a human scull covered in tiny crystals, Damien is a larger-than-life artist that is a perfect subject for fake Damien Hirst’s blog.

“The fear of becoming fat expressed in the joy of being colorful” by Damien Hirst

“49 peanut M&M’s of green, orange, blue, brown, yellow and red color which are sold in a mostly yellow bag on which it also writes that “To avoid suffocation, keep bags away from babies, young children and pets.” that I bought at a gas station on my way to the train station where my mother was waiting for me on a white plastic windowsill” on a photograph.

The blog’s artwork satirises many of the themes of the real artist, including a fascination with death and with using organic material from living or previously living animals and humans for his art. The real Hirst’s often lengthy and obscure titles are also mocked in fake Damien Hirst’s pieces such as “Impression of falling conclusion in the impossible spirit of spiritual America” and “Summation of Dreams in the heart of a reality show contestant wanted for the murder and mutilation of his ex-wife.”

For art fans, the Damien Hirst blog is a nod to the modern art society while still managing to have a bit of fun. Some of the artwork is pretty impressive as well, despite it being made in jest.
