All a-Twitter over eBay.co.uk’s 10th Birthday

eBay.co.uk has recently celebrated its 10th birthday and we have to say, it seems to be ageing well. While the service has been plagued by complaints about service and seller fees and the company making waves not for it’s business prowess but for an overall loss on the sale of Skype (which it had acquired not too long before), we think eBay is in fact looking pretty good. The site has had a facelift and the previously cluttered homepage is looking much more at home in the 21st century.

In addition to a new look, eBay has started to utilise social media channels to reach out to new and old customers with some frankly jaw-dropping deals. Their Twitter account @eBay_life4less offers special fixed-price deals on a huge range of items from fashion to tech. Recently they’ve promoted Acer notebooks at 30% off, a Samsung portable video player for under £20 and highly discounted Adidas trainers.

As eBay continue to promote these special fixed price deals, they’ve also started to reach out to local bloggers with the promise that interested blog owners can get in touch to set up custom deal channels to share with their readers. eBay even sponsored and visited the London Blogger’s Meetup on 8 September to directly interact with the new media crowd and show off their social media prowess.

For a ten year old site and service that’s been around since 1995, it’s great to see the old eBay trying some new tricks. Although it’s going to take a bit of work to recreate their image and appease buyers and sellers who have been burned in the past, they seem to be moving in the right direction and of there there are always more birthdays coming up when they can shower us with gifts. 70% of iPod speakers anyone?
