A few years ago, PokerStars invited me to take part in a “Twitter Celebrity” poker tournament. I secretly suspect this had more to do with the fact that they had too few women who had agreed to participate and I knew the organizer but none the less I was seriously chuffed. I was a celebrity (on Twitter, perhaps, but a celebrity none the less!) and I was going to play in a real-life poker tournament! I’d coolly watch the flop, poker face in place, and bluff the boys out of the competition.
As it turned out, I actually was pretty good, placing fifth overall. And thanks to that event, I caught the poker bug. PokerStars was happy to enable my new hobby with their range of low and high stakes online poker rooms but real life (and a paranoia of developing a gambling addiction) got in the way. I had less and less time to log in and eventually my poker star faded.
However only recently did I realize that PokerStars is not just a place where you can play a wide range of poker games online, but they also have a great mobile app so that you can bring your poker game with you on the go.
The PokerStars mobile app, available for iPhone, iPod, iPad and Android has many of the key features of the PokerStars site. You can manage your bankroll, and connect to both free and paid games with people of your skill level. Your ranking helps you determine who you should actually be playing against (so you don’t accidently end up playing against, say, Victoria Coren) and the free tables are great for beginners who want to get some practice – or experts who don’t want to put any money into the game.
Along with the poker tables, the PokerStars app also includes PokerStars TV, a great feature that allows users to watch all the latest videos from the world of poker, including full length television shows, classic clips from the biggest live and online events, and player interviews. Best of all, I’m not going to forget about a table I’m sitting at, or miss out on an opportunity to play a few hands on the go with the mobile version of the app. I may never truly be a celebrity poker player, or ever going to win any major poker tournament, but poker is a great, social and engaging game that, when enjoyed responsibly, can be a fantastic way to spend some time.
