Project Podcast

Like all the best ideas, our podcast started life in the pub. We were busy gossiping about life, love and lipstick over a bottle of wine, and joked about capturing the conversation. In the cold light of day, we wondered, would our bar banter be as entertaining as we thought it was at the time?

It was a challenge neither of us could resist. We’re both journalists, used to asking questions but not being part of the story – nodding in the right places to encourage an interviewee but not jumping in with killer anecdotes of our own. Once we pressed record, would we interrogate the hell out of each other, or would one of us hold court while the other held the microphone?

The other, more immediate stumbling block was that neither of us had the faintest idea how to go about it. So I did what any self respecting reporter would do – I asked on Twitter.

It was a revelation. Within minutes advice was flooding in about which software to use and which websites were the best (and worst) hosts for the resulting MP3. We opted for Podbean - find us at cabsauv.podbean.com - and even Twitter-cynic Carolyn had to admit that the site was invaluable after that.

In fact it was such an epiphany for my new podcasting partner that she immediately set us up a feed – 2peaspodcast – and is now tweeting merrily away about the social acceptability of personal grooming on public transport.

The whole point about our podcast was that we wanted to chat. We felt that the majority of podcasts out there tend to be celebrity, music or news-led – and made by men. The beacon of intelligent female discussion on television is Loose Women and if you’re at work or under 45 it’s not always the easiest on the ear.

We hoped to produce something warm, friendly and approachable that people could relate to. No showbiz anecdotes or – cringe – deliberate girly giggles – but a proper conversation about the topical things in our lives – be that weddings, email etiquette or backfat.

We’re open and honest about the good, the bad and the ugly sides of both our experiences and those of our friends – and as word spreads, we’re getting listeners wanting to share their own stories, which we will also weave in.

We haven’t come to blows (yet) but we do have differing opinions. Carolyn, for example, cycles to work – whereas I would feel safer sticking my right arm in a nuclear reactor. She also has the best dating stories in town while I have just got married – although I did manage to cause a UFO scare at my wedding reception which I think is quite an achievement.

Our next technical challenge is to find a host with a bit more space for our podcast collection as it grows. You’ll probably catch us asking the Twittersphere for help with that before too long. In the meantime, would you cut your fingernails on the train to work? Tweet us and you may well find yourself mentioned in our next offering….
